I forget the Hindu name for the stone slab that slopes into the water. It is something like 'brahmagul'. Bodies are placed on this slab to be washed in the river before they are burned. It is the gateway to Brahma. Above is a hospice where dying people stay. Right before they die they are brought down to the stone stairway where they take their last breath. It is very auspicious to die on these steps.
